The Gavi Briefing: On The Funding Crisis, The Immunization Agenda, And The African Vaccines Manufacturing Accelerator

Hi,

The immunization agenda is under attack, not only from some governments, but also from a growing anti-science movement in many parts of the world.

Organizations such as Gavi - The Vaccine Alliance have to contend with both - the challenges of disinformation at the highest levels of policy-making, and with uncertainty in the way they are funded. The broad shifts sweeping global health financing has left no organization untouched.

In today’s edition, we bring you some reflections from Gavi’s leadership on how the organization is coping and addressing the current transitions in global health.

Gavi CEO, Sania Nishtar spoke to reporters candidly last month, sharing her assessments on the way forward.

In addition, we also share remarks made by David Kinder, Director of Development Finance, Gavi, at an event organized by the Center for Global Development in Wahsington D.C., on April 23, 2025. (How Do Multilateral Funds Survive the Donor Retreat?)

We hope this collectively informs our readers not only about the challenges in the vaccination objective in the current political climate, but also on issues related to the longevity of global health agencies, and on innovative finance.

I. BRIEFING

The Gavi Briefing: On The Funding Crisis, The Immunization Agenda, And The African Vaccines Manufacturing Accelerator

By Priti Patnaik & Bianca Carvalho

The following is a two part discussion on Gavi’s thinking on the current global health climate.

  • The first part are reflections shared by Gavi CEO, Sania Nishtar at a press conference in Geneva last month.

  • In the second part, we present remarks by David Kinder, Director of Development Finance, Gavi made in Washington D.C. recently focusing on long term strategy and innovative finance.

In a press briefing for Geneva-based journalists on April 11, 2025, Gavi CEO, Sania Nishtar, spoke at length about the immunization agenda, on the upcoming replenishment, the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator, and the challenges that the global health community faces, and how Gavi intends to navigate them.

The briefing was organized by the Association of Accredited Correspondents at the United Nations.

In this edition we present the remarks made by Nishtar, and her lucid responses to a wide range of questions fielded by reporters represented by different news organizations including Geneva Health Files.

We have presented the interventions verbatim and by theme, and have only lightly edited for length and to improve readability.
