Dear Readers,
At the close of 2024, we have brought you over 100 editions from Geneva Health Files. It has been a year of heavy lifting, but has been our pleasure to serve you with in-depth, timely and critical reporting on key global health developments unfolding in Geneva which carry implications for the rest of the world.
While this year has been exciting, it has also been somewhat intense! We have been consumed by a fairly fast-moving news cycle. My colleagues and I, have tried to ensure that our readers find value in every edition. We have brought you news you can use that some of you have been paying for. We could not have continued to provide independent and rigorous reporting without concrete support from our readers, for which I am very grateful.
From keeping a close watch on global health negotiations: on the amendments to the International Health Regulations, and the Pandemic Treaty discussions getting deeper into the technical issues; we also brought you exclusives and reporting on the financing of World Health Organization; reporting on the governing processes at WHO; the discussions on the TRIPS review at the World Trade Organization; proceedings at the World Intellectual Property Organization; and numerous guest essays including on tax treaty discussions at the United Nations, to India’s Digital Health Initiatives, among many others. We supplemented these with interviews and podcasts to enrich our offerings.
My colleagues Nishant Sirohi, Tessa Jager, Yukta N, Vivek ND, among many others, have worked with me to bring you detailed, careful analyses week after week.
Our gratitude also to our numerous, countless sources across scores of countries. Without their passion, time, insights and generosity, none of this would be possible.
This year, it has been eye-opening to meet in person with our readers through the many events in Geneva including during the World Health Assembly in May 2024, and in Berlin at the World Health Summit in October 2024. We also had a book launch this year at one of the editions of the Geneva Health Files Dialogues.
We also took GHF on the road - to the International Journalism Festival in Perugia (Italy) in April 2024, and to Riga (Latvia), and to the Reinventing Media Business Forum in Riga (Latvia) in October 2024. At both stops, we showcased our impact on global health diplomacy and engaged with a broader ecosystem of media entrepreneurs.
In the nearly five years of our operations, we have consistently punched above our weight singularly focused on giving you more bang for your buck, despite being a very small newsroom. Heading into 2025, we are keen to expand our team for consolidating our operations, and for longevity!
Building a lean and mean journalistic start-up means a lot of blood, sweat and tears, on a consistent basis. Reporting and growing this initiative have meant working nights, weekends, holidays – all hands on the deck to get you our editions almost every single week over the last five years.
Like any media entrepreneurship initiative, Geneva Health Files has been a labor of love – love for journalism, keen on making a difference, and in recognising the importance of unbiased and accurate information in the highly polarised world also for global health policy-making.
The percentage of paying subscribers remains lower than required for financial viability. To this end, we ask for more of you to become paying subscribers, as it is the only way to ensure financial sustainability of Geneva Health Files and guarantee its independence.
Consider joining this movement towards driving greater accountability in global health policy-making and getting closer to global health issues. Help us expand stronger public engagement with global health by becoming subscribers, and/or, making donations.
I am incredibly proud, that GHF is the only Global Health Journalism initiative that is built on a reader-funded model. And we also want to become the first journalistic initiative focused on global health, to be commercially viable on the strength of reader-funded support.
Welcome to the community, and let us keep this going!
Share, Source and Support Geneva Health Files.
Cheers.
Priti
